Czech citizens certainly know how to take charge of your own national destiny. We saw it in 1968, we saw it again in 1989. I want to see it happening again in the 21st century on a European-wide scale, through the democratic channels that already exist and through new channels that you will open up.

European nations may continue to disagree over all kinds of issues – but instead of fighting we now sit round a table and discuss them. Eventually we reach a consensus agreement (more than 95% of cases) or a majority decision. It means a lot of compromises, but it works! And no-one gets hurt.
